about lent ash wednesday understand theology practice why

I did this little video so that I could help bring clarity to some people within my community where I live. It is Ash Wednesday and lately, as well as the last couple years, I’ve seen and heard a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding about this practice. So I thought I’d provide some clarity and direction for thinking on this matter if I could. Hope it helps! Let me know what you think!

Matthew 6:16-18 / Isaiah 64:6 / Colossians 2:16-17, Col 2:22-23

The Big Idea

A Christian’s whole life should be one of repentance. Never limit it to a period of ritualistic duty or obligation. We should do fasting and repentance to strengthen or restore our relationship with Jesus, not because someone just said do something so you can gain a blessing.

We should think well about all we do so we can worship well.

Colossians 2:16-17, 22-23 (NIV)
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.  These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ…
…These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
